Interview with The Osteoblasts - April 2020

Hi, who are Osteoblasts and what instruments do you play?

The Osteoblasts is a trio of friends that have foundations in a multitude of musical interests. Ernesto is the founding member, guitar player, and lead vocalist. Steven is the drums and percussionist, along with multimedia organizer and background vocals. Mark is the upright bass player and artist behind some of our designs and also performs background vocals.

What is the musical genre of the group?

The Osteoblasts are not limited to one specific genre but perform variants of Garage Rock, Surf, Indie, and Psychobilly. We mix sounds of Rock n Roll influenced by the different musical influences and maintain a Southern California/Los Angeles sound.

Why The Osteoblasts as a name?

The name "The Osteoblasts" comes from the essential cells of what makes bones and influenced Ernesto during his academic studies to be used as a band name, not just due to the way it sounds, but because Rock n Roll is the foundation for a lot of the music we perform making The Osteoblasts essential to Rock n Roll music.

Where are you from?

We are from a small town that borders Los Angeles and Ventura California that is infamous for a lack of excitement, bouts of racism, radioactive hills, and constant patrolling by the police called Simi Valley.

When did you start playing like Osteoblasts?

Ernesto founded The Osteoblasts with a close friend George Powell (drums) as a Rock n Roll duo but progressed into a trio in 2010/2011. Mark joined The Osteoblasts after the initial bass player (Nico Martinez) departed from the group in 2013/2014. Steven was actively playing in The Cigaratz but would perform with The Osteoblasts from time to time until becoming a permanent member in 2015. Since then we have been going strong and Rockin'

Do you have other parallel bands or do you play in other bands?

While we consider ourselves to be a unique and distinguished sound from other groups, we perform many shows of different musical genres. To say we have "parallel bands" is difficult to answer but we love playing shows with our buddies such as the Cigaratz, Très Muertos, Radarmen, The Night Times, New Age Entertainment, bands associated with Outro Records, and so many more.

Influences?

Our influences while similar are also quite different. Being Chicanos and 1st Generation Mexican-Americans, we have our influences from Oldies/Doo Wop/50s Rock n Roll to Mexican Regional Music, Hip-Hop, Punk, Black Metal, Jazz, Psychobilly, and so on. We take every little bits of influence from Music, to Film, Photography, and all different facets of Art to supplement our sound!

What are your favorite bands?

As for our favorite bands it's always hard to decide; for Ernesto he is currently listening to some of his favorite bands like Frenzy, Wavves, and Bass Drum of Death. Mark’s favorite bands are Venom, Les Crabs!, and Blitz. Steven’s favorites are currently Idles, Dead Moon, Blitz, Corners, and Death!

Do you have something recorded? Are you going to record something soon?

This is a funny question because of the current Coronavirus pandemic (remember wash your hands), we have just released our 3-song EP called "Isolation" that we recorded in Ernesto's garage within a 1-2 week timeframe during quarantine. We have a good amount of unreleased tracks, along with recorded tracks you can find on our Spotify and Youtube. There are 2 EPs in the works that should be released within the next few months; one specifically being released on 7-inch vinyl in Japan by Dirty Fucking Show Trash Records and Goon Records in the US. We will begin recording our 2nd full-length album hopefully before the summer season.

What do your songs talk about?

Our songs explore the different sentiments we have towards our existence, the cosmos, love, heartache, betrayal, resistance, individuality, death, and dualism

With whom and where have you played? Upcoming events of Osteoblasts?

Due to the global crisis we don't have anything planned for future events but hope with our release in Japan we will be able to perform, not just in Japan, but other international countries, along with a national tour here in the US. We primarily play in different bars and venues all over Los Angeles. We have performed with bands going back to the San Fernando Valley backyard Psychobilly shows to performing or opening up for more popular or renowned groups like Os Catalépticos, Starlite Wranglers, The Sloths, The Unclaimed, Gamblers Mark, Howling Wolfmen, and Surf Rats.

Are there good bands in your environment?

There are great bands everywhere and around us. Because we aren't the typical electro-pop-synth-indie bands, a lot of great talent gets overlooked so we are going to give a shout out to our friends and great bands that have shared the stage with us, continued to support us, and continue to make our Rock n Roll scene alive. Shout out to Très Muertos, Cigaratz, Radarmen, Cursed Bastards, TSR, Ugly, The Night Times, The Zooms, The Sound Station, Salty Hearts, Proland, and Thriller Party.
