1. Hi Zteben, how are you? Do you speak Spanish and / or do you really understand it?
Yes some, my mom's first language was Spanish. I read it better than anything.
2. Apart from playing the guitar and the double bass, do you play another instrument? How did you learn to play?
Yes, I play drums and little bit of keyboard when I was
younger. I will have some shows with NYC band Spastiks soon, with me on
drums. I also played drums for Phantom Rockers first and recorded the
last album on drums, guitar and some bass. Played drums in two other
Texas Psychobilly bands the Sewer Surfers and Humanoids. Played organ
and keyboard on some other albums. I just learned everything on my own,
before YouTube and the internet, haha.
Zteben is double bassist in Klax
3. What are your influences and what are your favorite groups?
My influences are all over. Lately lots of NeoThrash, Hair
Metal, Neo Rockabilly, New Wave, Dark Wave and Teddyboy. Stuff like
W.A.S.P., Iron Maiden, Wild Rooster, Lucifer and the Hellions, Sisters
of Mercy, Gama Bomb, Tears for Fears, Crisix
4. You played with Mark Cole, among others, how did you get
to make appearances for The Krewmen and how was the experience of
recreating psychobilly classics?
Man, that was a huge deal for me and very last minute. I
was one of four guitar players considered? Only American aged punder 30
on the list, I think. Mark Burke is the one who put me on the pedestal. I
got the go ahead and the rest was history. Still can't believe it
happened. Tony McMillan is one of my favorite psychobilly guitar players
too. We were supposed to do more shows all over the globe. But Mark
Cole decided to retire and record one last MDC album "Kingdom of
Scarecrow" (best stuff he has ever done in my opinion). I still talk to
him and Dominic Parr from time to time online. Everything clicked with
all four of us doing the classic Krewmen songs. Glad I got to do that!

5. You also play or have played with Phantom Rockers. For
those who do not know it, how did they find you and what is the
experience of playing in a group with a name in psychobilly?
They found me playing with a band called Sewer Surfers in
San Antonio, Texas. Their drummer Scotty Teece was about to move to
California. They needed someone who lived in Texas. So I tried out and
joined. We went in the studio a few weeks later to record. Group is a
lot of fun, always an adventure and I have gotten to play all over the
world with them. You have to have think skin to be in that band. Lots of
musicians can't handle it. We should be back in the studio next year
for another album.
Zteben looks like a
Phantom Rocker
6. What other groups have you collaborated with? Which
others would you like to collaborate with and which others you would not
like?
Man, there has been a decent list for me. Lucky I have been
able to pull it all off. Klax, Sickscrew (new band I have), Barnyard
Ballers, Phantom Rockers, Krewmen, Spastiks, Sewer Surfers, Pickled
Punks, Ghost Storys, Humanoids, sure there's a few I'm forgetting. I
would love to do some stuff with the Guitar Slingers or Moonshine
Stalkers. Ha, any instrument they need a fill in on! Bands I wouldn't
like, probably any band with drama or politics.
7. Have you recorded new things with these groups?
Yes, Sickscrew I am recording with right now, also Klax is
back in the studio. Sickscrew I'm on guitar, Spike from Barnyard Ballers
on Vocals, Frank from TR6 and Oxblood on bass and Ralphy from Concombre
Zombi on drums. It's a damn good line up.
8. In the past you had a very cool band that was called
'The Ghost Storys'. Why was it finished? What did you get to record? Who
edited it?
I moved to bass and the sound and changed. The idea
changed, we grew musically and felt the name needed to be changed and
move on. Recorded two demos and two albums. The albums were edited by
Joe at RBI recordings in Houston, Texas. The demos were by Tucker our
drummer.
9. You are currently the frontman of Klax. In my opinion
you are one of the current bands with more personality than there is in
the international panorama. What do you think about this?.
Ha, I like hearing that. Klax is just something we do that
we love. The line up has always been good to Klax. Right now the band
chemistry is perfect. Very great musicians who have each others back.
Klax of course I take more serious and we try to make it have depth
musically.

10. Why Klax? Does it have any meaning?
Yes, our 2nd album "Last Zyborg" is a concept album. Tells
the story of a prototype, robotic, being that is planned for slave
labor. He rebels and they have "Klax" a two particular STD virus to kill
him in this situation.

11. What do you have recorded ?, (records, demos, video clips, etc.) And under whom is it produced and edited?
Klax we have two videos and one more coming for the song
Rock Salt, it has been in the making for almost two years! We have our
first EP coming a Rock Salt single and working on a new album. Stuff has
been produced by us Klax and Justin Osburn, Kevin Bailey, Ralphy Giron,
Tucker and Ian Candler for different projects.
12. Some people suspect that you are an android. What is true about that?
Hmm, hahaha, news to me... I barley sleep at times. I might be due for software update soon.
He is a tattoed android from Klax
13. Thank you very much for being there, you can add whatever you want.
Keep an eye out for the next Klax video Rock Salt and our
upcoming vinyl record. Phantom Rockers next album and Sickscrew
recordings soon! Cheers, adios!
