La escena musical underground en Bulgaria por Charles Vane y Hektor Plasma

Recientemente hicimos un reportaje sobre la escena musical underground en Serbia de la mano de un amigo que toca en PSI y en Grandpa Candys, dos bandas de Psychobilly de Serbia.
Mi amigo Charles Vane, al que conozco desde hace unos años de vernos en Pineda de Mar con motivo del Psychobilly Meeting y el cual es uno de los dos responsables del Bad Billy Fest, se comprometió a hacer un reportaje sobre (parte) de la escena underground de Bulgaria. Digo (parte) porque la escena del Hip Hop no se a incluido y ahí es donde e añadido mi granito de arena yo esta vez.
Así que empezamos este reportaje especial sumergiéndonos en los Balcanes de Sofia, Bulgaria, tierra donde se originó el alfabeto Círilico que ahora se utiliza en mas de 20 países.





Dimna Zavesa
Hip Hop band from Sofia

They played since 1990. Dimna Zavesa mean "Smoke Screen" in English or "Cortina de Humo" in Spanish. They practice old school rap and they talking about the poor ones in Sofia like their and the life in their neightborhoods.



The Overalls
Rockabilly band from Sofia 
They perform mostly covers.

The first musical love on Marcello / Billy / Tempest's  is rockabilly style, that's where his nickname comes from Billy.Marcello manages to convince Valerie Pastarmadjievn (double bass) and Gogo Bakardjiev (drums) to make an incredible rockabilly trio! Marcello has participated in several rockabilly projects in Italy and has a long experience with this fun style!


Kontrol
Punk Rock band from Sofia

CONTROL is a Bulgarian rock band that appeared on the music scene in the late 80's. Following the release of the first album, the band's first solo concert will follow. In the early '90s they CONTROL released three iconic albums - "Bumm!", "Awesome!" and LuboFF. In 1997, vocalist Kolyo Gillana left the band. In 1999, CONTROL recorded the next album with vocals by Peter Stanoev. The sound is already firmer, in line with new trends and interests, otherwise the lyrics are still ironic-satirical. After a long pause, in 2009 CONTROL reunited with its original frontman Nikolai Yordanov, better known as Kolyo Gillana, to participate in two unique concerts. In May, CONTROL played in front of more than 7,000 spectators at the Winter Palace of Sport in a joint mega-show with HIPODIL and REVIEW (with Milena Slavova). On December 1, 2009, at the Universiade Hall, CONTROL celebrated 20 years since its first major appearance at the same venue. The concert also features Kultur Shock and Serbs Pero Defformero. In 2014, CONTROL got together with new vocals and started active club activities. Recording of new songs is starting. In April 2017 they released the album "9". In early 2019, they recorded a new song - "Police", featuring Gino Jevdjevic of Kultur Shock.


Holera
Punk band from Sofia 

HOLERA is a legendary Bulgarian punk group founded in Sofia in the winter of 1989 by 11th grade students. Their first live performance is on the "2X5" show at the National Palace of Culture. In the spring of '89, they received the first prize at the High School Rock Festival. On May 30, the same year, they participated in the third edition of the World and Wonderful People festival in Tsarevo (then Michurin). The band's first and only album is called "Scare Baby" and is released on the Bulgarian market in a yogurt pail (labeled "Sour milk") in which the cartridge is placed. The lyrics are humorous and obscene. The band briefly reached the popularity levels of bands such as Kontrol and HIPODIL, but after the release of the album it disintegrated. In 2008, HOLERA reunited for several performances. They also recorded a new song - "Godzilla", as well as a new version of "On the former 2" (2011).



Boys with Boots
Street Punk/Oi band from Varna 

is an old punk band from Varna. They play tight street punk! with traditional songs for combining punks and apolitical skins and for the pride of the working class. The sound is reminiscent of old bands like NABAT. Their first concert is at the TNT Club (near Asparuhov Bridge in Varna) with INDIGNITY, NOT BROKEN IN SPIRIT and CABANI. For several summers, they organized a two- or three-day street punk festival in Area 51, but in 2007 the third day was overthrown by the police. This turns out to be the last such festival so far. In 2004 they released a 4-song demo and in 2009 their first album. In August 2011, they participated in the "East Noise Attack" festival. In 2015, they recorded their second album, Alone with their boots.



Abort
Punk rock from Varna 

ABORT is a punk rock band founded in 1989 in Varna. They quickly gained cult status with a popularity beyond the punk scene. Their style is punk rock with scandalous lyrics. They are mainly influenced by bands such as the Ramones, GBH and Motorhead. They have a demo tape titled "Exhibition" in 1990. They also have a split with another Varna punk rock band - TARAN (AON). In 2007, ABORT reassembled and re-recorded some of their tracks for the soundtrack of the banned movie Baklava. Participations in clubs begin, and in the summer of 2010 they are among the participants of the "Spirit of Burgas" festival. Next year they participate in the two-day "East Noise Fest" in Varna.


C4
Punk/Hardcore - Sofia

C4 started in 2004 as a side project of members of the LAST HOPE, SWITCHSTANCE and TVU groups. Subsequently, from a side project, C4 becomes a full-blooded active group. In 2005, they performed with five tracks on the Sofia Streets split disc. In 2011 they participated in "Spirit Of Burgas" and in October 2013 they played on stage with DOG EAT DOG in Sofia. In May 2014, they participated in the Punk City Fest, and in 2016, the Rad Wasted Fest.


 
Brothers of Blood
Hardcore - Pleven

BROTHERS IN BLOOD was founded in 1998 in Pleven as a side project of Shuta (vocals) and Tseko (guitars). They are soon joined by young drummer Joro "Misery" and are trying to come up with some crude ideas inspired by hardcore bands like 25 Ta Life. Surprisingly, things are starting to happen, and after Sandy (POOL PUNISHERS) joined the bass, the band quickly recorded their first demo, "Pleven Hardcore Demo 1998". Following are some performances in Sofia and Varna in 98/99 with various guest bass players as Sandy breaks his arm. In 2001, Jester took over the responsibility of VENDETTA vocals and BROTHERS IN BLOOD ceased to exist for a long time. They met briefly in 2003 to participate in the I-Reject Balkan Tour. After the collapse of VENDETTA in 2005, the idea of ??reuniting BROTHERS IN BLOOD came naturally. Beginning at the end of 2005 with new members in the ranks. In early 2008, the album "Take Your Back Life" was released. The band visits Greece early next year. In the summer they open the concert of Biohazard in Sofia and play the "Spirit Of Burgas" festival. In the meantime, the band's guitarist settled in the Netherlands. In 2011, the band went to the Netherlands for several concerts. In 2012, the EP "As Time Goes By ..." was released. BROTHERS IN BLOOD is preparing a split with Brazil's Questions, which is due out in late 2015.

 

Last Hope
Hardcore - Sofia

The band was formed in 1994 - and by doing several demos and participating in numerous concerts, it has become one of the most popular Bulgarian hardcore names. The real strength of LAST HOPE is their gigs where they really blow up the atmosphere. In 1998, LAST HOPE recorded their debut solo album "One For One". In 2003, they signed with the German label Superhero Records, which released the band's second album for Europe. The label also organizes the first West European tour of LAST HOPE. In 2004, they were invited to play the legendary European hardcore fest - "Ieperfest" in Belgium and co-tour with 25 Ta Life. Next year, they make a mini-tour with Agnostic Front and are in support of Murphy's Law's European tour. Over the years, the band has regularly participated in festivals and club tours across Europe and has established itself in the European underground. They performed on one stage with names such as Agnostic Front, Madball, Biohazard, Napalm Death, Murphy's Law, Ignite, Backfire, 25 Ta Life, Anthrax, Stampin 'Ground, Integrity, DRI, Most Precious Blood, Caliban, Walls Of Jericho, Knuckledust , Merauder, Sworn Enemy, Since The Flood, Shattered Realm, Blood For Blood, Overkill, Exodus, Terror, Hatebreed, Suicidal Tendencies ... and many more.


Piranha
Skate Punk - Sofia

In a nutshell… It all started in the summer of 2011. Four skate friends shared a love of skateboarding and early punk music decided to set up a skate punk rock band. Inspired by bands like JFA, THE FACTION, BLACK FLAG, CIRCLE JERKS, OFF and others, Piranha started touring the country. Without a sound check and preparation, they play aggressive 20-25 minute sets of genuine punk, skate everywhere, and stop having fun.


Alcofilia
Punk/Hardcore - Burgas

The ALCOFILIA group was established in 1994 in Burgas by Atanas Valchev-Pufo (vocals) and Todor Sepultura Georgiev (drums). The guitarist and bass player are Dobrin Stoyandzhov - Darko and Boyan Ivanov respectively. From the outset, the band has been oriented towards punk / hardcore sound, with lyrics being exclusively alcoholic. In 1995, the debut "Is Life Sober?", Darko was replaced by Todor Dimitrov-Muftata during the recordings. The band then started working on a second album. They also make demo records, but gradually their activity subsides. After a long pause the group was reactivated. In 2010 they took part in the Burgas Metal Carnage festival and a year later the Spirit of Burgas. In the summer of 2016 they also participate in the "Sea of ??Black" festival. They began to record the tracks composed for the second album in the '90s. The album "Love was ..." is released on February 14, 2017 - the holiday of the winemakers "Trifon Zipped".


Hipodil
Punk/Ska - Sofia

The HIPODIL group was established in 1988 by a group of students from the Sofia Mathematics High School. From the very beginning the boys have been playing songs with lyrics in Bulgarian and the style can be defined as punk rock. In the beginning, the band didn't have many public appearances. One of their few performances is at a festival at the Summer Theater. Thanks to their eccentric staging on the stage, HIPODILE gained the fame of something outrageous, something different in their early days. After some personal changes, the band enters Studio City and records 6 songs. In the summer of 1993, HIPODIL recorded their debut album, "Alcoholic Delirium." Almost immediately, after the release of the album, the band embarks on a national tour. To everyone's amazement, the music business tour is a success. From now on, HIPODILE's career goes up. Following are a series of albums and tours. In 1998 they included a brass section on the records of the album "Coals". This is the band's most successful album.


Svetlio & The Legends
Ska/Punk Rock - Sofia

The group was formed in the beginning of 2007 by Svetlyo Vitkov. The debut album "Bulgarno" is released in July. In the summer of 2008 they participated in the Summer Ska Fest in Sofia, and about a year later at the Spirit of Burgas festival. In 2011, the band promoted their second album "IBAN", which included the cities of Plovdiv, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Svishtov, Gabrovo and Sofia. In the same year they participated in "ON! Fest" in Sofia. In 2012, they recorded their participation at the Mezdra Rock Festival, and in December and April, the following year they toured the country. Svetlio & THE LEGENDS have participated in the festivals "Wild Child Rock Festival" - Varna, "Sofia Metal Fest", "Rock Fest Hotalich", "Rock Fest Knezha" and others. The band also has shows in England.


Pizza
Skacore/Punk Rock from Varna 

PIZZA is a skacore / punk rock band from Varna and has been around since 1999. Their name comes from a circular playground in front of a liquor store in the sea garden where punks gather. The lyrics are fun and humorous, with an emphasis on alcohol, grass, yogurt, appetizer and laziness. After several changes in the composition, the group settled into its present form: Kobo, Kayo, Helmet, Rambo, Vitko and Gianni. In 2008 the debut album entitled "AllBoom !!!" was released. In 2010, the band participated in the "Spirit of Burgas" festival. The second album of the same name was released at the end of 2014 and presented at the traditional Hardcore X-mass 2014 winter festival.


Sofia Ska Skins
Ska from Sofia

The group was formed quite spontaneously in 2004 at the O! Shipka Club, where three friends, who have gathered for beer (Anton, Svetlyo and Rosen), embrace the latter's idea to form a ska group. They hope that this way more people will pay attention to the skin-head culture and skin-head society. Then they decide to add a brass section to the group, which turns out to be very difficult. The band that formed the band is Rosen - vocals, Svetlyo - guitar and vocals, Velin - bass and vocals, Delyan - drums, Kircho - zugtrombone and Toshko - trumpet. In 2006, Delyan left the group for personal reasons and was joined by Stefan. After a short activation time, SOFIA SKA SKINS is back on stage. The new drummer brings fresh ideas and strength to the band and in 2007 followed two memorable performances at Swingin Hall - with Petzko and TVU. For various reasons, Velin (bass) and Svetlio (guitar) leave and put the band before a new test. Soon, Vlad is behind the guitar, after which the music gets even louder. In early 2008, Tsetso joined the band as a basketball player. Over the years, SOFIA SKA SKINS has stagnated until 2012, when they are activated with modified composition ...


Ahat
Heavy Metal/Hard Rock from Sofia

AHAT is a Bulgarian rock band formed in the fall of 1986. Their first documented appearance was on December 22 that year. After several performances at the festivals, AHAT was selected as the warm-up band for the Jubilee of the Storks. This gives a powerful impetus to the development of the young band. In 1988, AHAT recorded the song "Black Sheep", which remains one of the most prominent emblems of the Bulgarian heavy metal to this day. In the summer of next year, the band released their debut album, The Hike. In the early 1990s, they decided to try their luck in the Netherlands. There, they compete in a Yamaha contest, making English versions of some of their songs. They were ranked fifth (out of about 500 participants) but were disqualified because the competition was alone for Benelux groups. Unfortunately, the group then breaks down. After a break of several years, in 1998, the band reunited to open Sofia concerts at the legendary Deep Rurple. The band has already changed composition - the main composer and guitarist Bozhidar Glavev abandons the rock and finds harmony in religion. They then went to America to record their next studio project. In 2003, they reissued the Hike on CD. On June 14, 2003, the AHAT played to over 10,000 people at the Academic Stadium, where they warmed up the audience for Whitesnake. But their big comeback is actually in the summer of 2003, when they embarked on a major national tour for the first time since 1991. His concerts were released as a documentary DVD. On May 19, 2004, the "Made in USA" album is now officially on the market, in the format of a multimedia CD, cassette, video cassette and DVD. In 2004, AGAT participated, together with CONTROL and FEARS, in the Golden BG Rock Tour - a large-scale national tour that runs through sixteen major Bulgarian cities. In 2005, the band played with Black Sabbath in front of over 15,000 viewers. On the last day of 2006, on the occasion of Bulgaria's accession to the European Union, AHAT had a joint concert with Dio. In 2017, members of the band living in Bulgaria undertake a jubilee tour around the country with guest musicians from ANALGIN and special guest Joe Lynn Turner. In the fall of 2018, the AHAT celebrates the 30th anniversary of the march with a stellar concert in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture.



Impulse
Hard Rock/Blues Rock later Thrash Metal from Sofia

The group was formed in the early '70s by Vili Kavaldzhiev. It attracts musicians from the disintegrated first formation of the Libra group, with whom they have been involved since the Viking era. The repertoire is made up of covers by Free, Bad Company, Nazareth, Rod Stewart and more. One of the most memorable impulses is at the Aesthetic Education Club of Sofia University. A large number of musicians pass through the band. Following the breakup of the group, Ilia Kanchev agreed with Willie to use the name IMPULS for the band he had created.


Stancho Bandjo
Country -Chirpan

STANCHO BANJO is a colourful Bulgarian Country/ Gospel & Bluegrass/ Folk Singer/ Songwriter and Guitar player who moved to Ireland ten years ago. He was born in a small flat town in the heart of charming postcommunist Bulgaria where Country music is still an exotic style.

His first ever performance in 1993 on a Bulgarian National TV Talents Competition brought him straight into the first position on the National Country Music Chart.

Since then he recorded two author's full-lenght CDs.. and nurtured four kids :-)

Bozhurishte - Bulgaria

WIKEDA is a group formed in March 1998 in Bozhurishte by former members of the thrash metal band SPLEEN. Their music is a mix of ska, punk, reggae and more. From the outset, the band has created several hits that make it one of the most popular bands in the country. In addition to their numerous appearances in Bulgaria, WIKEDA has also participated in festivals in Hungary (Sziget Festival 2000-2005), Macedonia (Taksirat Festival 2002), Croatia (Ska- / Reggae- / Dub-Festival 2002), Slovakia (2002). .), Greece (Agrinio Festival 2002) and Germany (Fusion, Rockxplosion, StadtFestival 2003, Waltroper Parkfest 2004), as well as concerts in Melkweg (Amsterdam), Kulturbrauerei (Berlin), Fleche d'or (Paris). In the fall of 2006, they embarked on a large-scale, two-month, European tour, including Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.


New Generation

The group originates from the short-lived project LOGO B, and its name comes from Dimitar Voev's track "New Generation Forever." The year is 1988. In '89, the first record of the BG Rock series was released, which was split in half by Control. At the beginning of the 91st, Joe Dilema released their first cassette album, Forever. In the summer they make tours in the big cities of northern Bulgaria - Pleven, V.Tarnovo, Ruse, Dobrich, Varna. On October 19, 91 the first Dark Wave Party in Sofia takes place, at which "NG" plays with "Violet General" improvisations. On November 7/8, the same year, the New Generation Fanclub organized the grand ECO-Rockfest in defense of the Rousseans, which was held in the underpass of the bridge. BNT is aired directly, and CNN reports it. On May 7, 1992, another of their legendary Live - "NEW GENERATION and Friends", filmed by Ivo Hristov and Enil Enchev, takes place in Bulgaria Hall. The Dead Poets are warming up, and members of KALE, WOZZECK and CHUGRA, are ABSOLUTELY beginners. This is the last concert with Dimitar Voev. On September 5, the 27-year-old is transferred to Heavenly Stage. On November 7, 92, a concert in his honor was organized at the Universiade. The episodic returns of old members of the band renewed its activity. On June 21, 2006, NEW GENERATION opened for DEPESHE MODE, playing in Exit for MTV-Europe, and the following year for Europe United on the British Council.

In the year 87, the cult group KALE disintegrated, having risen to two emblematic groups in Bulgaria during this period - REVIEW and NEW GENERATION. In '89, REVIEW recorded signs, for their time, tracks, among them - "Ala Bala", "Waterfall Director", "Uncle" and others. By the 1990s, the band had performed a number of concerts both in Bulgaria and abroad, mainly in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc. They have won a number of awards from elite Bulgarian music competitions. Director Ivan Kovachev is making a movie about the group called "Director of the Waterfall", which tells the story and shows excerpts from their live performances. At the end of the year, after participating in a music festival in Korea, the musicians cease their performances and decide to seek a conversion abroad. Milena remains in Bulgaria and continues to perform as a solo artist. In 1996, the returning Boycho Karaboychev and Vasil Gyurov began recording a new album. Unfortunately, the album remains unfinished because of the untimely death of Boycho in early 1997. REVIEWs returned in 2001 and released the "10" album. The breakfast pilot became a song of the year at the MM TV Awards in 2002. In 2003, 1968 was nominated for Best Song in the nominations of the MM Television Annual Music Awards. In 2016, REVIEW released their new album, "RevJulution."


New Flowers
Kyustendil Bulgaria
Oi Punk

New Flowers is a Bulgarian punk group from Kyustendil, established in 1979-1980 and considered the first Bulgarian punk group. Future band members hear punk music on Skopje radio for the first time and decide to create a band. They start with self-made tools. The first tracks in the repertoire are covers of Exploited, Peter and the Test Tube Babies with lyrics by the band. In these early years, many people passed through the group and their rehearsals were often "attended" by the authorities. The first demo records are from coupons and concerts in front of friends. In 1986, NEW FLOWERS participated in the amateur art festival. In '88, the young Kyustendil artist Rumen Sazdov invited them to participate in his performance in front of the Art Gallery. Next year is the first participation in Sofia - Universiade Hall. The band have been spotted and have been invited to participate in several concerts with other bands at the Student House. During this period they also participated in the ranking of Emo Bratanov "Blacktop". "Letters Hot" is ranked third and "Radiation" is second. From that time on, he also participated in the landmark concert at the Beer Factory along with Violette General and Green Kills. In 1992, they participated in the Dark Party with NEW GENERATION and VIOLET GENERAL in Kyustendil. Between '93 and '95 the band played with Pseudochor, Apathy and Snobbery and HIPODIL in the former party house. At the same time, they recorded a demo album, "Radiation," which was released on tape. In 2004, the album was reissued on CD by AON, and included 15 demo records from the past years. This aroused interest outside the country and songs of New Flowers were included in several compilations, and Maximum Rock'n'Roll magazine published an interview with the group. In 2006, the band released their second album, Earth Paradise, and two years later, the first vinyl release of five tracks.




Haika
Ruse - Bulgara
First All Women bulgarian Thrash/Death Metal band!!!

HAIKA is a women's metal band from Ruse, founded in August 1991. The style chosen is aggressive thrash / children's metal, and the main generator of ideas is guitarist Ralitsa Nedeleva. Two months later, in October, they participate in the 12-hour eco-rock festival Save Rousse. In 1992, the band was interviewed and performed live on national television. In 1993 they participated in the TV program "Rococo" with the video for the song "AK-7,62".


Agressor
Sofia
Thrash/Death Metal

The band was founded in the beginning of 1989. In the same year they debuted on the stage with concerts in Pravets and the Sredets Community Center. They did not have a permanent drummer during this period. After two years in the barracks, in '91, the three core members reunited and recorded three pieces with guest drummer Rosen (ex-Dragster), who became a permanent member of the band. In the summer of 1992, Aggressor took the stage at the 113+ Club with a new bass player - Vlado K. The following year was marked by the release of the debut album "Love and Blood" and the filming of the video "The Powerlessness of Time". The video aired on RockOco and reached number one in the show's ranking. In the spring of next year, Agressor participated in the first children's metal festival in Dupnitsa, along with 17 more extreme groups from the country. The band's second and final album - "Look Back to the Future" is out ...



Episode
Heavy/Folk Metal

The rock band "Episode" was created in the "Emil Sekerdzhiski" Community Center - Sofia. For a long time, many rock musicians have learned to play with this name. They also created the first few songs on the lyrics of the medieval French classic Francois Villon. On June 18, 1989, "Episode" appeared at the second national rock festival in Vidin and won the Grand Prize. Following are concerts in many cities in the country and participation in the Rock Eye program on National Television. In 1990, the episode performed in a concert at the Universiade Hall in Sofia, gathering many thousands of audiences in one place. The Rock Ring show at the Academic Stadium followed. with torches lit. The first albums of the Episode are based on poems by French poets from the Middle Ages. In 2000. the group is beginning a new phase in its development. Songs based on poems by Ivan Vazov and Hristo Botev have been created. Folk songs are being reworked with folk instruments included. In the mid-90s they created the rock opera "St. Patriarch Evtimiy", which was presented in front of the natural scenery of the Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo. The story line continues in addition to the albums and the Asparuh Rock Theater - The Battle of the Angels. Apart from the group, Stanislav Pandin, Maria Doychinova, Veronica Georgieva, Simeon Angelov and the Panthers are performing. The director is Stanislav Strinski and the playwright and music is the leader of the group Simeon Hristov. It premieres in May 2018.
