Entrevista a King Moroi - Noviembre 2019

Hi, who are you King Moroi and what instruments do you play?

Hi, I’m Smirnov and I play bass and sing. We also have Jerry Toothpaste on the guitar and vocals as well as the Monkeyboy on drums and backing vocals.

KM last june 27th

What is the musical genre of the group?

If I only have one word, i’d say it’s psychobilly. Additionally we are adding a lot of punk, surf and something else to it.

Why King Moroi as a name?

It doesn’t sound too stupid and it’s easy to find in the internet. “Moroi” is an east European word for vampire.

Where are you from?

We are based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. However, we are a multicultural band, made up of German, American and Russian blood!

When did you start playing like King Moroi?

We started the band in 2012 and played our first shows in 2013. After a few gigs we had to find a new drummer. Since then we are happy we found the Monkeyboy.

Are you also playing in other bands?

I played with the Rollin’ Racketeers, but we don’t play anymore. We are building a new project with former Racketeers musicians. Jerry has a rockabilly band called “East Town Rumblers”.

Influences? Are they your favorite bands?

All three of us have slightly different backgrounds and preferences. Considering all of the influences - it’s a huge spectrum from Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Dick Dale and Joe Pass to AC/DC, Tool, 311, Distemper, Zuname, NoFX, and of course
many psychobilly legends as Frenzy, Batmobile, Long Tall Texans, Demented are Go, Mad Sin, Nekromantix, Meantraitors and Meteors. I guess that’s what makes our music a little different from many other bands. So much for the musical component. Speaking of influences – there are many well - known international bands performing awesome shows. Some have existed now for over 25 years, which is definitely impressive. There are so many smaller bands out there, who play often, loud and as fast as they can – this attitude is inspiring for me.

Do you have something recorded? Tell us what you have. Are you going to record something soon?

We released a debut album in 2015; 2016 followed a 7 inch record; and now we are releasing a new 7 inch single. We also contributed to various samplers.

What do your songs talk about?

Some of our songs are horror movie episodes, others are about daily problems,
some about having fun and partying and of course some of them are about love.

With whom and where have you played? Upcoming events of King Moroi?

In the last few years we played with so many cool bands and locations. We are keeping track of all our adventures on our website. Check it out! www.kingmoroi.de We completed two tours around the Baltic sea, outside of Germany, where we are playing a majority of our shows. We have played in Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium. We are planning a few shows next year, but a bit less than usual to concentrate on songwriting. We see so many bands falling apart, mostly because they write boring songs. We don’t want to become the next one!

Are there good bands in your environment?

Yeah, there are a few. Our homies East Town Rumblers, mentioned above; a young band called Psychotronix (from Wiesbaden), The Minestompers (from Cologne), an awesome skate punk band Scheisse Minelli (from Aschaffenburg),
The World Domination (from Erfurt). We also met (or still want to meet) some other awesome bands The Psychonauts (Switzerland);  Wrist Rodeo (Finland);  Kareta Susana (Indonesia); Graveyard Bashers (Finnland); The Shrieks (Finnland); Danziger (Poland),  Bad Ol’ Pervs (Poland). Check ‘em out! P.S. I’m sure I forgot some other cool bands. Oh wait a minute, you asked about good bands. I think that’s all for the good ones, in fact you can reduce the above list by at least a half (laughing).
